An electronic cigarette on e-cigarette is a device operated by battery that emits vaporized nicotine, sometimes non-nicotine solutions for the consumer to inhale. The gist is to provide a similar experience of inhaling the tobacco smoke, without the smoke. They are also known by the names of e-cigarettes, e-cigs, vaporizer cigarettes, electronic nicotine delivery systems, and vape pens. They are deployed as a way to cut down or put a halt on smoking.
It is a long tube that generally looks similar to a cigarette, pipe, cigar or a pen. They are mostly reusable, along with the refillable and replaceable cartridges, and some are disposable as well. The first patent was requested in 1963 by Herbert A. Gilbert, but the existing device didn’t make an experience until 2003.
The e-cigarette we know was invented by a Chinese pharmacist named Hon Lik who worked for Golden Dragon Holdings which is now known by the name Ruyan. The company began to export into huge markets in the years 2005 and 2006. There are now more than 460 different brands in the market.
How do they work?
Most of the e-cigarettes have:
- a mouthpiece, or cartridge
- a heating element
- a rechargeable battery
- electronic circuits
When you suck on the mouthpiece, the heating element is activated by a sensor that vaporizes a flavored and liquid solution kept in the mouthpiece. The person then inhales or vapes the aerosol solution. The content of nicotine may vary from zero to extra high.
The mouthpiece is referred to as the cartridge that is attached to the tube’s end. There is a small plastic cup attached within the mouthpiece that keeps an absorbent material which is drenched in the liquid solution. The cartridge can be refilled or replaced with another pre-filled cartridge whenever required.
The atomizer is a heats the liquid solutions, hence causing it to vaporize. The solution can be inhaled.
The battery powers up the heating element. This is usually a lithium-ion battery that is rechargeable.
The sensor powers up the heater when the consumer sucks on the mouthpiece. A LED light is displayed when it is activated. The solution which is also termed as e-juice or e-liquid which is made by filtering nicotine from tobacco and concocting it with a base, generally the propylene glycol and the flavouring. The former can be used in inhalers. For instance, for asthma. There is a multitude of flavors to choose from, with names like traditional, menthol, lava flow, and watermelon.
Some flavors like a concoction of menthol and tobacco, try to imitate the flavour of traditional cigarettes. A multitude of them claims to imitate particular brands.
- They aim to resemble the traditional cigarettes without any need to burn the tobacco.
- They are sold as means to cut down or stop smoking and many find this means helpful.
- But researchers claim that it may negatively impact the health.
- Health authorities are trying their best to develop stringent laws to discourage people to use e-cigarettes.
