You’ve heard all of your life to either stay out of the sun or if you are going out into the sun, to wear sunscreen. You know the smell like the back of your hand, and it actually serves as a sentimental smell, because it reminds you of good times in your childhood most likely, either with parents or grandparents. What you probably didn’t realise as a kid is that wearing sunscreen was about much more than protecting your skin against sunburn and the discomfort that comes from that. The adults in your life were trying to protect you from sun damage. UV rays are produced by the sun and are damaging to exposed skins.
Sun Exposure Dangers
As discussed above, sunburn is a danger of exposure, but it is the immediate exposure. It is the danger that you can see. Cells and blood vessels of the skin have been damaged. The damage only worsens, the more times you allow it to happen. Skin which has been sunburned repeatedly for years on end has a tendency to look like leather, because it is so dried and damaged. A little-known fact is that damaged skin due to sun burn bruises more easily than healthy skin which hasn’t been damaged.
Skin cancer is the most dangerous threat when it comes to sun exposure. It is one of the most common types of cancer. There are different types of cancers, some are more dangerous than others. Reduced exposure to the sun can reduce the chances that you will develop skin cancer later in life.
Exposure to the sun can also cause freckles and blemishes in the sun. Have you ever realised that you have more freckles now than you used to or that you are able to tell which parts of your body receive a decent amount of sunlight and which do not? Although being tan is from the sun is seen as being a good thing, your palest skin is probably the healthiest.
How to Protect Yourself?
Sunscreen lotion application is one of the best ways to protect yourself if you must expose your skin to the sun. Although avoiding exposure is the absolute best way to protect your skin from the sun, it’s not always possible. For this reason, it’s important to take all necessary precautions. Choose a sunscreen with a high SPF, this means that you will receive a greater amount of protection than a lower SPF number. Sunscreens are even safe for children to use, and there is even a designated children’s line of children’s sunscreen.
The sun emits its most harmful rays during the middle of the day. It’s important to avoid the sun as much as possible during this time of the day. Wearing protective clothing such as long sleeves, a hat, and long pants will protect the skin on your body from becoming damaged by the sun. Wearing glasses that have UV light filtering component will also help combat the harmful effects of the sun.
